Building My own Website – Are Site Builders any good?

There are a few hosting companies that offer a free WYSIWYG Site builder. WYSIWYG is “What you see is what you get”. In other words, these companies encourage you to use their site builder by the fact you don’t have to know html or any other type of coding to use them.

The problem is, the code generated by these site builders is atrocious and search engine optimization is important if you want people to be able to find you in search engines. Some of these companies claim that the site you build using their software will be optimized for the search engines. It won’t be. I’m not saying they are lying to you. Maybe they don’t know any better. 🙂

The second problem with using a site builder they offer and the second reason they offer it to you is; Once you build it there, you can’t move it to another hosting company later. They know people aren’t likely to move away from their hosting company if the site was built using their proprietary software. You may want to change hosting companies for a variety of reasons later on, but you won’t be able to do that if you used their site builder to build the site. Once you build it there, it stays there. The only way to move to new hosting is to rebuild your website.

Of course, you’ll be able to copy the text and paste it into your new site and maybe even some of the code. But it’s a real hassle compared to have a real website coded and just moving it to your new hosting company.

Pros and Cons of using a Site Builder

Pro – You don’t have to know how to code in order to build your website

Con – It won’t be optimized for the search engines

Con – You can never just move the site to new hosting

The best way to build a new website, is to either code it yourself, build it using WordPress, (Software that allows your site to be moved anywhere), or have someone build it.

Another piece of advice: Your cousin’s sister-in-law’s son who knows a little html is not the person to hire to build your website. If you want to run a successful online business, hire a professional to build your website. Your Website will be the primary way you get new clients. Do you really want to use a shortcut with something that important?

If you are doing business online, how you build your website is one of the most important decisions you have to make. Consult with a professional before you start. And by professional, I don’t mean a web designer who says they also know search engine optimization or SEO. Hire an SEO professional first. Let he or she help you plan the website before it’s built and before you hire a designer. Hiring a web designer that also does SEO is like having your house built by your gardener who also knows how to do some carpentry work.
